A Vineyard Defined
by the Elements

Petaluma Gap · Sonoma County

Perched at 700 feet in the Petaluma Gap, Sweet Family Vineyards produces fruit of uncommon character — shaped by wind, fog, and ancient soils — for California’s most discerning winemakers.

The Site

Where the Gap
Meets the Ridge

At 700–750 feet elevation, the vineyard sits above the fog line on a rocky, south-facing ridge. The soils are volcanic — chalky, fractite-laden, and mineral-rich — forcing vines to root deep and produce small, intensely concentrated berries.

The Petaluma Gap’s signature coastal winds funnel through the corridor daily, naturally slowing ripening and preserving acidity. Surrounding redwoods create a sheltered microclimate where morning fog lingers, afternoon sun warms, and evening breezes cool.

The Soils

Where Stone
Becomes Wine

Beneath the vines lies the vineyard’s defining feature — a rare Spreckels–Goulding soil mix laid down above the Rodgers Creek fault. Rocky and volcanically influenced, these lean soils refuse to give the vines an easy life.

Low-vigor growing conditions force the canopy to settle, the berries to stay small, and the fruit to concentrate. The result is wine of unmistakable mineral expression — structured, taut, and rooted to this specific piece of ground.

Farming Philosophy

Precision at
Every Step

We farm for quality above all else. Low yields, meticulous canopy management, and hand-sorting at harvest ensure every cluster meets the highest standard. Night harvesting preserves freshness and aromatics in the cool Petaluma Gap air.

Our winemaker partners are collaborators — welcomed into the vineyard throughout the growing season. We work alongside them to determine pick dates, cluster counts, and farming decisions tailored to each wine’s vision.

  • Hand-farmed, low-yield viticulture
  • Night harvesting for optimal freshness
  • Winemaker collaboration from bud break to harvest
  • Block-by-block quality assessment
  • Transitioning to certified organic practices

Partnership

Built on Relationships

We work with a small number of winery partners who share our commitment to quality and place. These are long-term relationships — built on trust, transparency, and a mutual respect for what this land can produce.

Sweet Family Vineyards is not a brand. We are growers — dedicated to producing the finest fruit from an extraordinary site and delivering it to winemakers who will honor its potential.

Stewardship

Organic Transition

We are actively transitioning to certified organic farming practices. Our vineyard already operates with minimal intervention — using cover crops, integrated pest management, and regenerative soil practices. Full organic certification is our commitment to the future of this land.
